Description[]

"A multi-hitting kick that can be cancelled into special moves."
Street Fighter 6

Executed by pressing back and Heavy Kick, Ryu performs a kick upward, followed by a heel drop. The attack has had various appearances as Ryu's close standing heavy kick, such as in Street Fighter IV, and sometimes as his Standing Medium Kick.

Axe Kick's properties have varied throughout the series, though its most prominent usage is in the Street Fighter IV series and beyond. In the Street Fighter IV series, it can be used to break Focus Attacks due to it being a double-hitting attack, letting it break Super Armor. Both hits can be cancelled into Shinku Hadoken, while the second hit can be FADC'd, letting Ryu perform high damage and high stun combos.

In Ultra Street Fighter IV's OMEGA Mode, Axe Kick is turned into a unique attack, which it has remained as in all subsequent appearances. This allows Ryu to use it at any range.

In Street Fighter V and Street Fighter 6, both hits can be special-cancelled, and most notably, can juggle from EX Joudan Sokutogeri, allowing Ryu to add extra damage from any combos before cancelling into his other special moves.

Trivia[]

  • Axe Kick has been a staple of not only Ryu's moveset, but various other shoto characters as well. Ken uses part of the Axe Kick for both his Close Medium Kick in some games and his Inazuma Kick.
