Display Lag isn't a Street Fighter specific problem per say, but as it is a real time fighting game, Display Lag could be a problem that affect players' experience.
Description[]
With the transition of older televisions (CRT) to High Definition (HD) televisions, an issue that has been a problem is Display Lag. Display Lag refers to the delay of what is actually happening and when the television (or monitor) of choice shows in picture what is happening. Many official events strive to make Display Lag a non issue by using low latency televisions.
How to reduce[]
It should be noted that all HD Televisions have a degree of Display Lag that can not be removed. Newer games account for a certain amount of lag that Televisions within the specs do not have the issue. Older games such as Special Champion Edition for the Sega Genesis can cause problematic, as they run at a resolution of 240P that tends to give modern display troubles.
For the best experience playing older Street Fighter games from the Playstation 2 many argue using an old CRT style television, as they do not do any processing of the image. These non EDT (Enhanced Definition Television) CRT's simply display what is taken in immediately. If a CRT is not practical there are still ways to attempt to lower Display Lag (but not erase) in an HD TV Set Up.
- Turning on Game Mode: By turning on game mode picture processing and other enhancements games do not need are not done by the display, increasing the speed the picture is shown to the user.
- Attempting a progressive display: 240P, while progressive, is usually misinterpreted as 480I which is an interlaced format. Playing with a display that mistranslates 240P adds extra lag to the display due to processing and certain items can appear wrong. 480I also does the same as the television performs a de-interlacing process.
- Making sure the HD TV accepts 240P correctly: This will not make the display process the image in any way and increases the speed of the picture processing.
- Using a dedicated De-Interlacer: Playstation 2 and Xbox games tend to run at 480I. Using a good deinterlacer can decrease the Display Lag penalty to less than a frame compared to an inbuilt one.
- Using Hacks: Some modding software such as Free Mcboot for the PS2 can force the console to switch 480I to 480P with select games.
