"Not today! Shoryuken! (禁じ手! 昇龍拳! Kinjite! Shouryuuken!?)"
Gouken

The Forbidden Shoryuken (禁じ手・昇龍拳 Kinjite Shouryuuken?, "Forbidden Hand Rising Dragon Fist") is a special attack that made its debut in the Street Fighter Alpha series. It usually appears as the result of a 'missed' Shin or Metsu Shoryuken by Ryu.

The move is later introduced 'proper' as a Super Combo used by Gouken in the Street Fighter IV series.

Etymology[]

Kinjite comes from a term used to describe a move forbidden in sports such as sumou, go, shougi, and the like. It should be noted that the move is performed rather with the left facing or immediate hand; within the context of Japanese martial arts and warrior philosophy, the left hand is considered forbidden due to many aspects, including how it is meant to represent the aspect of yin and latency.

Gouken utilizing Forbidden Shoryuken in Ultra Street Fighter IV

The regular Forbidden Shoryuken is in most cases an "accidental performance"; executed as a failsafe for more grander and powerful forms of the Shoryuken that have missed their conditions to truly perform to their optimal peak, the user re-utilizes their wind up to merely rise into a high rising, but double edged form of the Shoryuken. While still a somewhat powerful move, the focus and energy put into the intended attack is wasted in analysis, leaving its user vulnerable in many ways, from lengthy recovery from the fall afterwards, to not having the intended power behind it for its user to attack to its fullest and win their battle. As such, this variation of the Shoryuken is "banned" or forbidden in many cases for its improper performance.

For Gouken, his Forbidden Shoryuken is performed as hiougi or a trump attack; winding up his foremost fist by taking a step back for proper stance, Gouken then launches up into the air for a powerful high reaching Shoryuken. Likely in his pursuit to walk the path of Mu no Ken, Gouken has adopted this form of the Shoryuken as to hold back the Satsui no Hado stimulating aspects of Ansatsuken, and to purposefully weaken the move to not risk fatal or maiming injury.

Tactics[]

In general cases, as its namesake implies, this attack is the less-than-desired and worst case scenario form of the Shoryuken move. When performed, the Forbidden Shoryuken is simply a multi-hitting Shoryuken, with a trajectory similar to Akuma's Goshoryuken. The move possesses a significant recovery, much longer than that of a fierce Shoryuken, making the move very punishable. Due to the greater needed energy to control the more turbulent momentum of the attack to perform, the Forbidden Shoryuken always makes its user land near off-center outflanked back first towards the opponent, leaving them wide open if the attack did not land or was defended against, will unforgivingly drain all reserves of Super Meter/Focus, potentially wasting any tactical opportunity with the disadvantage of empty meter, and due to its imprecise nature, makes it weaker than its originating intended form of the Shoryuken. Thus, this attack must be greatly avoided to be performed at all costs, unless in desperate and uncommon cases, must be used with great and extremely precise judgement to ensure that this attack will be used effectively without greater risk of loss than reward. Some specific situations include utilizing it as an anti-air of sorts, especially if the opponent should mistime their Super/Ultra Combo.

For Gouken, his version delivers the most hits at eight combo hits, and its horizontal trajectory can be altered based upon the punch button used to activate it; light punch maneuvers Gouken the least distance, while hard punch has Gouken rise the distance equivalent to a missed Shin Shoryuken. The Forbidden Shoryuken can also be Super Canceled from nearly any attack, making it a central key move in his playstyle; at the same time, due to Gouken's focused yet rigid playstyle, he requires a greater deal of control, especially in his combos, to not command accidentally into the Super rather than either a Gohadoken or a Senkugoshoha if the Super Meter is at max. At best, the attack should only be performed in response to a high vulnerability opening hit confirm as a combo finisher, or if the opponent leaves themselves wide open to be punished, and only if to either win the match or unleash big damage to even the playing field, as Focus applied to Gouken is utilized greater in his EX Attacks and Focus Cancelling into his Ultras. As such, Gouken's Forbidden Shoryuken must be conditioned like that of a normal fierce or EX Shoryuken to a regular Ansatsuken user, but with greater control and mindfulness of the attack's capabilities and opportunities.
