Gorin Festival (五輪祭? lit. "Olympic Festival") is a sports event in the Rival Schools series held by Gorin High School.
In the Japanese PlayStation version of Rival Schools (Evolution Disc) and in Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2, Gorin Festival is an event from the Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki mode held on November, where the player must participate in one of the three minigames available.
In Project Justice, Gorin Festival is only mentioned in a banner from the Gorin Dome stage, which informs that it will be held on September from the year of the game's events.
Minigames
The artwork from the Taiyo-Pacific athletic competition is used as the icon for the Gorin Festival menu in both games.
Gorin Festival is also the name of the menu containing minigames in the PlayStation games, which also includes minigames from other events in the Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki mode:
| Events | Evolution Disc minigames | Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2 minigames |
|---|---|---|
| Taiyo-Pacific athletic competition (June) | Home Run Mode, Shoot-out Mode, or Server Mode, choosen by the player | Decisive Battle! Fiery Sprint (for Taiyo High and Pacific High students) Target Mode (for Gorin High students) |
| School Festival (September) | Target Mode | Doki-Waku-Dance |
| Gorin Festival (November) | Home Run Mode, Shoot-out Mode, or Server Mode, choosen by the player | |
In the Japanese games the minigames are available from the beginning, grouped together in the Gorin Festival menu accessed from the main menu. In the English version of Rival Schools its four minigames require to be unlocked and are separated in the main menu.
Home Run Mode
Home Run Mode, known in Japan as Shoma's Home Run Competition (将馬のホームラン競争?), is a baseball minigame where the player controls Shoma as the batter, having to hit the ten balls sent by the pitcher (who is also Shoma). The score depends on how far each ball flies, with each meter being 1 point.
In Rival Schools the pitcher always throws the ball with the same speed. The baseball field has the logos from Capcom Friendly Club, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Resident Evil 2, and Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact.
In Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2 the speed from the pitches varies, increasing the minigame's difficulty. All logos from the field were removed and the sky is darker.
In the English version this minigame is unlocked by completing the 1P Game with Shoma on the hardest difficulty.
Shoot-out Mode
Shoot-out Mode, known in Japan as Roberto's PK Battle (ロベルトのPK戦?), is a soccer minigame where the player controls Roberto in a penalty kick competition against other Roberto controlled by the CPU or other player. Both the kicker and the goalkeeper can use the Guts gauge to do a Power Shot (爆裂Vゴール? "Explosive V Goal") or a Shining Save (シャイニングセーブ?), respectively.
In Rival Schools the soccer field has the logos from Plasma Sword, Vantan, and Red Earth. In Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2 the logo from the games were removed, and Vantan's logo was replaced by Capcom's logo.
In the English version this minigame is unlocked by completing the 1P Game with Roberto on the hardest difficulty.
Target Mode
Target Mode, known in Japan as Roberto's Explosive Shot (ロベルトの爆裂シュート?), is a soccer minigame where the player controls Roberto to hit the 15 score panels on the goal, each giving from 100 to 500 points. The player can only kick 6 times, but a well placed kick can hit multiple panels.
This minigame is set on the same field as the Shoot-out Mode.
In the English version this minigame is unlocked by completing the 1P Game with any character on the hardest difficulty.
Service Mode
Service Mode, known in Japan as Natsu's Service Ace (夏のサービスエース?), is a volleyball minigame where the player controls Natsu on the Gorin H.S. Gym stage to hit the targets present. Each target has the face from one of five characters, each giving a different score. Shoma gives the highest score, while Raizo reduces the score.
In the English version this minigame is unlocked by completing the 1P Game with Natsu on the hardest difficulty.
Decisive Battle! Fiery Sprint
Decisive Battle! Fiery Sprint (決戦!炎のスプリント?) is a dexterity minigame from Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2. The player must press either the circle or X button at the right time, indicated by the speed gauge, to increase the speed and win a 100m race against the opponent.
In the Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki mode this minigame happens during the Taiyo-Pacific athletic competition if the player is a student from Taiyo or Pacific High, racing against Batsu or Roy. In the minigame menu the player's character can race against, from the fastest to the slowest: Hyo, Shoma, Batsu, Boman, or Gan. It is also possible to compete with other player.
The minigame's field has the same background as Shoma's minigame.
Doki-Waku-Dance
Doki-Waku-Dance is a rhythm minigame from Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2. The player invites one of the playable characters to dance and must repeat the button combination done by them.
