HidekiOkugawa

Hideki Okugawa.

Hideki Okugawa (奥河 英樹) is a video game music composer best known for being the main composer of all three incarnations of Street Fighter III, especially 3rd Strike, where he collaborated with Toronto underground rapper Infinite. He joined in 1993, where his first tracks were for early CPS2 title Alien vs. Predator.

He followed suit with other CPS2 titles such as Darkstalkers (with Takayuki Iwai), Mega Man: The Power Battle (with Setsuo Yamamoto) and Street Fighter III (with Yuki Iwai). During this time he was usually credited by his alias, Hideki OK.

Okugawa is renowned for spearheading the jazz component in Capcom's sound team, variations including jungle, acid and drum 'n' bass. He has also incorporated Japanism and rock styles on occasion.

Trivia[]

  • When creating Jazzy NYC (underground edit), he wanted to emphasize the groove feeling by sampling “WOO YEAH” from Lyn Collins' Think (About It) (1972). He combines it with the sax and vibraphone to give the image of New York.[1]
  • Hideki Okugawa wanted a song that “doesn’t make you think of Japan very much.” The theme Good Fighter is the exact opposite to Jazzy NYC that represents New York. At first he made it with a raw rhythm pattern, but later it was changed to an eight-tone rhythm pattern.[1]
  • For Funky Bay and Bottoms Up, he incorporated hip hop, jazz funk and soul into the tracks.[2]
