Hotenshu is one of Akira's special attacks in Street Fighter V.

Description[]

Executed by performing a Shoryuken motion and pressing kick, Akira leaps and swings her leg to perform a jumping high kick. Upon reaching the peak of her jump, Akira finishes with a back flip, swinging her both of her legs during the rotation to complete a second kick.

The move functions primarily as an anti-air attack, sharing similar properties to that of Cammy's Cannon Spike. It is solid for catching jump-ins. This is a more reliable anti-air option, compared to her Crouching Heavy Punch. The Light version is invincible to throws, while the Medium and Heavy version are invincible to midair attacks. Because of its invincible properties, this move is Akira's best wake-up reversal option. However, it is very unsafe on block. During the recovery frames of this attack, Akira is vulnerable in a Counter Hit state.

Besides being Akira's go-to anti-air attack, it is also used to end combos. Hotenshu is her most damaging special move. Its fast startup makes it easier for Akira to link from most of her normals. It also deals more stun, compared to her other special moves. On hit, it leads to a knockdown and creates separation between her opponent. While this resets the neutral game, Akira can safely charge up her first V-Skill before her opponent can recover.

The strength of the kick button determines the height of the jump, startup, range, and damage output. The Light version has the fastest startup, but inflicts the least damage. The angle of her jump is nearly vertical, making it useful to stop shallow jump-ins and cross-up attempts. The Medium version inflicts slightly more damage than the Light version. It also travels further and higher. While the Heavy version has a slightly slower startup, it has the best range, which is solid for stopping far jump-in attempts. It can also be linked from most of her normals in which the Light's and Medium's angle may be difficult to connect. Akira can cancel the first hit of Hotenshu into her Critical Art.

The EX version has the same startup as the Light version, same range as the Medium version, and inflicts more damage than the Heavy version. Akira is also fully invincible during the startup of this move. Besides being a reversal option, Akira can finish off Light hit-confirm combos with EX Hotenshu due to its startup and range.

  • Hotenshu is a variant on the Renkantai, a double kick used in bajiquan that was also popularized by the 1988 manga Kenji. Other variants of the attack include Nishokyaku and Mujinkyaku.
    • Hotenshu is notable in that it is not based on Akira's Rival Schools moveset, rather being an original move created for her Street Fighter V appearance.
  • In Fighting EX Layer, Blair Dame's Lightning Knee is also similar to Akira's Hotenshu.
