Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki (熱血青春日記 Nekketsu Seishun Nikki?, lit. "Hot-blooded Youth Diary") is a gameplay mode in the console versions of the games in the Rival School series. It is a school life simulation where the player creates an Edit Character (avatar) to enrolls in a school and studies for a year alongside the playable characters from the series.

Versions

Rival Schools: United by Fate

Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki is a mode exclusive to the Japanese version of the Evolution Disc. After creating an Edit Character in this mode, the player can use the Edit Character option to add up to 16 Edit Characters in the character select screen, making the avatars available in other modes.

The player starts the mode by creating the avatar. Afterwards Kyoko Minazuki will introduce the basics from the mode, and Hayato Nekketsu will test the player's basic skills. After the test, the player will start the school life.

The purpose of the game's Lesson Mode is to allow players to practice and get better scores on the tests given by Hayato during the simulator.

Shiritsu Justice Gakuen: Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2

A Japan-only game with an improved version of the simulator from the first game. The simulator's story is more detailed and has more options.

Before the player creates the Edit Character, Chairperson will introduce the player to the mode. After the player creates the character, the player will go for an entrance multiple choice exam mini-game by Kyoko. Once the player finishes the mini-game and the player passes the multiple choices, Kyoko will give 2 status increases, but if the player failed, one of the parameters will be decreased.

The player will meet the Rival Schools characters, who will introduce themselves, then the player will meet Ran, Nagare and Shoma's older brother Shuichi (pronounced Syu-iichi). Then, Shuichi will introduce other instructors in this mode: Gengoro "Kinzan" Sado, Gan's sumo instructor, Shizune, Hyoe, Kyosuke's science teacher, Sayuri, the theatric instructor, Kotaro Okita, Natsu's volleyball coach, Kozue, a student painter, and Mari Nanase, Roberto's assistant soccer coach.

Later, Chairperson will let the player choose which club they will join, which will periodically affect the character's parameters. Every September and January, she will ask if the player wants to change the club.

Project Justice

Main article: Moero! Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki

Moero! Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki (燃えろ!熱血青春日記? "Burn! Hot-blooded Youth Diary"), Nekketsu Nikki for short, is a 2 to 4 players board game exclusive to the Japanese version. The player can play against CPUs or other players. Each square from the board has a effect, and characters from the series are scattered around the board. After the board game is completed, the avatars will fight each other in a tournament, and the player that did most points in the board game and fighting game will be the winner. If the player manages to befriend one of the playable characters around the board, there will be a scene with that character in a campfire.

Gameplay

In all versions the player starts the mode by filling out an admission application form, the choices affecting the player's starting stats. After submitting the application, the player can edit the avatar's face. Afterwards the player will start the school year and interact with the playable characters in various events. The player's actions will affect the avatar's stats and moveset.

Character creation

The admission application form exam has the following questions:

  • Names: In the PlayStation games the player enters the full name (氏名), divided as surname (名字/姓) and given name (名前/名), and a short nickname (呼び名) that will be the name usually displayed. In Project Justice the player enters a name for the board game mode (ボードゲーム用名前) and a shorter name for the fighting game modes (格闘ゲーム用名前).
  • Desired School (志望校): Taiyo High School, Gorin High School, Pacific High School, or Gedo High School. Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2 added Justice High School to the choices, and Project Justice added Seijyun Girls High School.
  • Gender (性別): Male (男) or female (女).
  • Birthdate (生月日): Month (月) and day (日). Absent in Project Justice.
  • Favorite Subject (得意科目): PlayStation games only. Choices are English (英語), Math (数学), Japanese (国語), Science (理科), Social Studies (社会), Physical Education (体育), Music (音楽), or Arts (美術). In the Evolution Disc the player also chooses which one of them is the least liked subject.
  • Faculty (学科): Project Justice only. General course (普通科), physical education course (体育科), industrial course (工業科), home economics course (家政科), or performing arts course (芸能科).
  • Player Type (プレイヤータイプ): Evolution Disc only. The choices are consecutive attacks type (連続攻撃タイプ), aerial killer type (空中殺法タイプ), hot-blooded and gutsy type (熱血根性タイプ), one-hit finishing moves type (一撃必殺タイプ), or physical defense type (肉体防壁タイプ).
  • Favorite Word (好きな言葉): Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2 and Project Justice only. The player selects three words from the choices available: Power (権力), ruthless (冷酷), cowardice (卑怯), reason (理性), effort (努力), love (愛), sincerity (誠実), guts (根性), reversal (逆転), wild (野生), genius (天才), swoop (漁夫の利), humility (謙虚), boldness (豪快), laziness (怠惰), or friendship (友情).

After completing the form, the player customizes the avatar's face by selecting the eyes, nose, and mouth. Project Justice also allows to select the avatar's hair. The body will have the uniform from the selected school.
