The Shun Goku Satsu is a popular attack in the Street Fighter series, known as Akuma's most powerful attack. Its popularity has caused it to find its way into the movesets of several other characters, as well as other forms of media.

Akuma and his forms[]

  • Shin Akuma - The form Akuma attains from absorbing Rugal Bernstein's Orochi powers in Capcom vs. SNK 2 possesses the most powerful known variant of the Shun Goku Satsu (the latter's is known as "Last Judgment"). Not only does this attack have the usual benefits of Shin Akuma's variant (very fast and much longer slide, priority etc.), it is a 33 hit attack that can cause up to 60-70% damage to the opponent's total health, making it even stronger than the Wrath of the Raging Demon. The unique kanji that flashes if Shin Akuma finishes an opponent with the Shun Goku Satsu means "godlike person" (神人, shinjin). The "神人" kanji also appears in Street Fighter V.
  • Cyber Akuma - The cybernetically enhanced version of Akuma seen in Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter has his own variant of the Shun Goku Satsu, called the Shining Gou Shock. This variant has all the properties of Shin Akuma's, but is also the first to be usable in mid-air. It hits 24 times and deals much higher damage in comparison to the original (around 20% more). The kanji of "destruction" (滅, metsu) appears on Cyber Akuma's back if he finishes an opponent with the Shining Gou Shock.
  • Oni - Akuma, as Oni, possesses the regular version of the Shun Goku Satsu and, like Cyber Akuma, can perform the attack mid-air. The name of the technique is even more befitting, since Oni is a full demon. The kanji that appears in the background may be a composite of "god" (神, kami) and "ogre" (鬼, oni), or "soul" (魂, tamashi).

Other Characters[]

  • Evil Ryu - It is the same as the original version, but the kanji for "destruction" (滅, metsu) appears instead. In the home versions of Street Fighter Alpha 3, his first appearance as a fleshed out character separate from Ryu, Evil Ryu has a weaker 12 hit variation of the Shun Goku Satsu. However in the later games, Evil Ryu has the standard variation with 15 hits.
  • Sakura - Sakura possesses this attack in her Dark (or "Sunburnt") form, but the attack is spelled with the kanji 春獄殺 ("Spring Sinner Killer"), also pronounced "Shun Goku Satsu" in Japanese (thus in on'yomi reading it "shun/haru" causes it to be a homophone-styled pun). Also, she can perform the attack in the Street Fighter EX series as her normal self, curiously, without the Satsui No Hado taking over her. Finally, in her cameo in Rival Schools, Sakura's Team-Up Attack is the Shun Goku Satsu (with the same kanji as above), except that it's simply a conventional beatdown, with her ally holding the opponent down. In Marvel vs. Capcom 2, it is somewhat stronger than Akuma's, having 18 hits.
    • Sakura is implied to be just as capable of harboring Satsui No Hado too, as per the account of UDON comics, and when it manifests in her, she becomes just as vicious as Ryu is under its influence, reveling on its power. Unlike with Ryu or Akuma, hers is triggered by her deep concern for Ryu being hurt.
    • In Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, she appears to retain her civility, though in that game, she follows Akuma more than Ryu.
  • Dan - In addition to the above, Dan has a parody of this attack called the Otoko Michi (漢道, "Way of the Man"), and its command is the reverse of the Shun Goku Satsu. In most games, the attack's properties are almost the complete opposite of the original; it either takes away the user's health or does minimal damage. However, in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 it does high damage and takes priority even over Akuma's Shun Goku Satsu; the self damage is still present, though. SVC Chaos is one of the only few games where the self-damage isn't present due to the system mechanics of the Exceed move (requires low health to use; and Otoko Michi is treated as one).
    • In the Street Fighter comics by UDON Entertainment, Dan is implied to have some amount of Satsui no Hado infesting in him (likely from the feelings of revenge and hatred he harbors towards Sagat for killing his father) and thus is able to perform the actual Shun Goku Satsu. The above mentioned kanji of "father" (父) appears on his back, like the kanji of "heaven" (天, ten) on Akuma's. However, the only time the dark power comes to fore is during a sparring session with Sakura and in true Dan fashion, Dan manages to trip over Sakura's schoolbag during the initial slide, abruptly ending the move.
  • Juni and Juli - Juli and Juni can perform the Death Cross Dance as a Level 3 tandem Super Combo in the Dramatic Battle Mode of Street Fighter Alpha 3, during which they team up on an opponent and deliver a 18-hit beatdown. Though it shares the same input as the Shun Goku Satsu, its first hit is an elbow strike instead of a grab, making the move blockable as it is more of an autocombo.
  • Kairi - Kairi's version, the Kyouja Renbu (凶邪連舞, lit. Bane Wicked Chain Dance), is somewhat similar, but instead of sliding towards his opponent, he runs towards them. In Street Fighter EX Plus α, Kairi runs to them and delivers a six-hit combo (a jab, straight, then a triple following-leg attack via knee strike, low kick then high kick) which ends with him grabbing his opponent with the leading hand, then impaling them through the stomach with his following fist. In later installments, his version of the Kyouja Renbu blacks out the screen similar to the Shun Goku Satsu itself, filling it with kanji Kekkai kageshuu nenshou fuu, meaning "Inheritor of the bloody assault, destroy the seal!"; at the end of the attack, he is seen holding his head in screaming agony over the defeated opponent (also used as one of his normal victory poses).
  • Hokuto - Hokuto uses the aforementioned Kyouja Renbu attack in Street Fighter EX Plus α. Her method is the same as Kairi's: she runs towards the person and delivers the aforementioned six-hit punch/kick combo ending with the grab-to-the stomach impaling blow. Hokuto's version in later games also often causes her opponent to be covered in eerie blue fire upon contact. This attack is mainly exclusive to Hokuto's Bloody version in the games, where it is known simply as Renbu (連舞, lit. Chain Dance).
    • Likewise in the first EX game and its revisions save for EX2 and EX3 (where Evil Ryu and Akuma no longer appear), the kanji during the attack that appear in order are metsu (滅, destruction; the kanji Evil Ryu would use in future games) satsu (殺, kill), and the classical ten (天, heaven/sky). Evil Ryu in EX3 does not have these kanji appear during the attack, as the screen simply blacks out as usual.
  • Guy - His Bushin Muso Renge is often compared with the Shun Goku Satsu due to the similar visuals, motif and damage. However, this is powered by Guy's immense Bushin-ryu skills rather than by any supernatural power, and is technically a grapple super move.

Capcom[]

  • Morrigan - Morrigan's Darkness Illusion was the first super move to use the button press sequence (LP, LP, F, LK, HP) that is now commonly associated with the Shun Goku Satsu, thus predating it.
  • Lilith - Lilith's Luminous Illusion has the same button sequence and behaves similar to Morrigan's version of the move, except that she ends up bisecting the opponent afterwards. There is also a glitch the player can pull off with Luminous Illusion, where the opponent's torso totally disappears from view; however it'll only work if they land the move while crossing up and if they kill the opponent with it.
  • Zero Gouki - The mech based on Akuma from the console ports of Capcom's Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness - can perform the Shun Goku Satsu. Its input of Attack1-Attack1-Forward-Weapon-Boost, is similar to that of the original. Unlike the original, the screen doesn't go black, so the player can actually see Zero-Gouki attacking his opponent.
  • Demitri Maximoff - Demitri soon gained a rather infamous Shun Goku Satsu counterpart attack known as the Midnight Bliss. This attack has him come to present a rose, before transforming his opponent into a female, or into a more demure and susceptible outfit, before assaulting them and draining their blood. In some installments, the screen will also go black. Another counterpart is his Midnight Pleasure, which acts more like the Shun Goku Satsu except for the screen blanking.
  • Omega Zero - In Mega Man Zero 3 and Mega Man ZX, the end-boss uses a variation of the Shun Goku Satsu known as Ranbu (乱舞, "Wild Dance") as one of his most powerful attacks. He will use the technique when (depending on the mode in Mega Man Zero 3) either his health is below one bar; in Mega Man ZX, he can do it twice in succession at any given moment. However, the screen does not black out as Omega Zero instead leaps at the protagonist and repeatedly slices them in a nearly inescapable chain of seven slashes that ends with a rising slash should it connect. This is the only in-game appearance where a variation of the Shun Goku Satsu is visible when performed on the opponent, along with Zero-Gouki's in Cyberbots.
  • Hayato - In Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, a Hyper Combo called Ura Rasetsuzan (裏羅刹斬, "Reverse Rakshasa Slash") which is a stronger version of the original Rasetsuzan, is used by Capcom character Hayato and uses the same animation. He dashes toward the user and impales them. Instead of blows being struck when the screen blacks out, sword slashes are heard and seen. There is no kanji seen before or after the move is performed, but the move involves Hayato's evil alter ego, Black Hayato, taking over and performing the attack, a theme fitting with how the Shun Goku Satsu is used by dark personalities, such as Evil Ryu. The move is oddly somewhat screen dependent, as Hayato rushes to the side where he first starts on a match after he completes the attack, no matter which side the move is performed from.
  • In Capcom's Breath of Fire IV, a learnable technique called Disembowel uses the same animation of attack and the Kanji right after the attack is done. However, it doesn't have the same power from fighting games versions, since it cuts the enemy's HP to 1 and rarely hits.
  • Asura - In the DLC Lost Episode of Asura's Wrath, Asura and Evil Ryu attempt the move on each other, ending in a draw. Not only does he use a different character, but his front is toward the screen instead of away from it.
  • Shadow Lady and Shadow's Final Mission is visually similar to the Shun Goku Satsu but unlike it, Final Mission can be blocked, and it acts as an autocombo.
  • Iggy - In Jojo's Bizzare Adventure: Heritage for the Future, Iggy's 'Sandstorm' super uses the same input and functions almost identically. Iggy grabs the foe, and the screen turns to static while it hits, and the move is unblockable. In the game's files is an unused image that was probably intended for the super.
  • Kakyoin/New Kakyoin - In Jojo's Bizzare Adventure: Heritage for the Future, when in 'Stand on' mode, both Kakyoins have a raging demon super, called punishment time. Kakyoin's stand Heirophant Green will slowly move forward and if it touches the opponent, Heirophant will shrink and go inside the opponent's head and a cutscene will play. The move is unblockable, but is very easy to dodge and punish because of its long start up time, but has good damage.

Other Games[]

  • God/Ultimate Rugal (Capcom vs. SNK 2 only) - SNK character Rugal obtains this attack after absorbing Akuma's power. Dubbed Last Judgement. The "heaven" (天, ten) kanji appears in the background if this move is used as a finisher.

Comics[]

  • Rogue - Marvel Comics character Rogue can utilize a variation of the Shun Goku Satsu (dubbed Demon Rage) by kissing Akuma during game play. A large X is superimposed on the background.
