"Disrupt your opponent's balance with a kick, then smash their head into the ground as you fall backwards. Throws your opponent while switching places with them."
Street Fighter 6

Executed by pressing down-back, plus Light Punch and Light Kick, (or the Light Attack and Medium Attack for Modern Control) near an opponent. After grabbing the opponent by the wrist, Zangief kicks his opponent's gut; forcing them to bend over. Next, he puts his opponent in a front facelock position. Finally, Zangief swings both of his legs forward, dropping both himself and his opponent to the ground and driving their head onto the floor.

Tactics[]

Zangief is a grappler who specializes in throws and command grabs to break through the opponent's defense and inflict maximum damage. Mixing up his normal throws with his signature Screw Piledriver is crucial to his game plan. By utilizing the many throws he has in his arsenal, Zangief can keep his opponent on their heels and force them to make a mistake. While his command grabs inflict more damage, his normal throws has a faster recovery; making it useful when baiting out a jump.

While Zangief has a wide range of throws, Russian Drop is mainly used to switch sides with the opponent. If used as a Punish Counter, then this move inflicts more damage than a few of his regular throws. While this is effective in putting the opponent back in the corner, Zangief received very little okizeme afterwards. Normally, his back throw or his crouch throw leaves Zangief slightly closer to the opponent, which is preferred to reapply offensive pressure.

Trivia[]

  • This throw is arguably based on a popular professional wrestling move called the Snap DDT, which is used by many professional wrestlers such as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Lita, and Alexa Bliss.
