"A defensive maneuver in which you cover your head with both arms, giving armor to your upper body and automatically countering your opponent's attacks if hit. If you continue holding the button following a counter, you will return to the Scutum stance."
Street Fighter 6

The Scutum (スクトゥム Sukutumu?) is one of Marisa's special attacks, introduced in Street Fighter 6.

Input
Classic Arcade Stick QCB+Arcade Button Kick
Modern Arcade Stick Right+Modern SP

Description[]

Scutum

Executed by performing a quarter-circle back motion and pressing kick, Marisa puts her arms to the sides of her head in a defensive stance. If she's hit during that time, she does a short charge at her opponent, breaking their stance. The guard can be held for 2 seconds. This move gives Marisa 2-hits of armor, making it solid defensive option along with Drive Impact. It can be used against a jumping opponent or against projectiles, allowing her to close the distance upon absorbing the hit.

This attack can then be followed up with the below attacks, or during the initial stance:

Tonitrus[]

Input
Classic Arcade Stick QCB+Arcade Button Kick>Arcade Button Punch>Arcade Button Punch
Modern Arcade-Stick-Right+Modern SP>Neutral or Arcade-Stick-Right+Modern Button>Neutral or Arcade-Stick-Right+Modern Button
"A two-hit attack that can be performed from Scutum. The first hit is an overhead attack that cannot be blocked while crouching, making it useful for penetrating defenses."
Street Fighter 6

Tonitrus (トニトルス Tonitorusu?) is executed by pressing punch twice during the Scutum. Marisa performs a double axe-handle punch to smack her opponent overhead with her hand forming a shape of a heart. If the first attack connects, Marisa then does a second strike on the way back up, spinning her opponent out. The first attack is an overhead, which can surprise the opponent if they are expecting the low kick follow-up attack. It is also -3 on block, making it difficult for the opponent to punish due to the pushback. The second attack results in a knockdown. However, it is very unsafe on block and somewhat difficult to hit-confirm from the overhead.

Procella[]

Modern Arcade-Stick-Right+Modern SP>Arcade-Stick-Left+Modern Button
"A sweeping kick that can be performed from Scutum. It is a low attack with a long reach that cannot be blocked standing, making it useful for surprise attacks."
Street Fighter 6

Procella (プロケッラ Purokerra?) is executed by pressing kick during the Scutum stance. Marisa swings her front leg around to sweep her opponent's legs with a low kick. This move can only be blocked while crouching. Marisa can also surprise her opponent if they are expecting the overhead follow-up. It also results in a knockdown on hit. However, this move is also unsafe on block.

Enfold[]

Input
Classic Arcade Stick QCB+Arcade Button Kick>Arcade-Button-LPunch+Arcade-Button-LKick
Modern Arcade-Stick-Right+Modern SP>Arcade-Stick-Down+Modern Button
"A throw that can be performed from Scutum. Pin your opponent to the ground and pound them with a single powerful punch. Useful as a way to break through the guard of an opponent who is expecting Scutum to be followed by a punch or kick."
Street Fighter 6

Enfold (エンフォルド Enforudo?) is executed by pressing Light Punch and Light Kick simultaneously during the Scutum stance. Marisa grabs her opponent by the wrist and push down on the back of their head to get them in a low crouching position. While gripping their wrist, she steps over and mounts on top of her opponent's back, putting most of her weight on top of them. With her opponent defenseless, Marisa winds up and delivers a powerful punch to the back of their head, smashing it into the ground. She then stands up and kicks her opponent aside.

This attack is Marisa's only throw option during Scutum. It is essentially a command grab that cannot be blocked. It is great for keeping the opponent guessing and breaking through their defenses. Compared to her other follow-ups, Enfold has the fastest startup and inflicts the most damage. However, her command throw has a lot of recovery frames, leaving her vulnerable if this move whiffs.

Trivia[]

  • Respectively, Scutum is the Latin word for "shield", Tonitrus is "thunder", and Procella is "storm" (but it can also be translated as "assault").
  • Scutum's pose is modeled after Niku Curtain, the defensive family technique of the Kinniku clan as seen in the Kinnikuman manga series.
    • Enfold's pose is modeled after The Wrestlers, a Roman reproduction of a Greek statue depicting two men engaging in pankration dating back to around 300 BCE.
