The Second World Fighting Tournament also known as the Second World Warrior Tournament was the central event of the Street Fighter II series.

Plot[]

This tournament was set a few years after the events of Street Fighter Alpha 3 and a few months before the events of Street Fighter IV.

Sometime after gaining a new body, M. Bison uses Shadaloo to establish a base in a temple in Thailand. Bison also subjugated a nearby village to establish his criminal empire yet still provided the village with essential supplies. To lure out Ryu once more, Bison takes influence from his bodyguard Sagat to announce the Second World Fighting Tournament organized by Shadaloo (Sagat was both the sponsor and final challenger of the First World Fighting Tournament several years prior) with the main intent on retrieving Ryu's body, as well as wanting revenge towards the fighters who had hindered his criminal organization's efforts by luring in the heroes into Shadaloo's Temple Hideout located in Thailand for Bison, Sagat, Vega and Balrog to beat each one of them into submission in order to not have anyone prevent him from starting world domination.[1]

The fighters have entered the tournament for different gains: Ryu, Ken, Zangief, E. Honda, Dee Jay, and Fei Long have competed to prove their own fighting skills; some other challengers such as Blanka and Cammy have entered to uncover their own unknown past origins; Dhalsim and T. Hawk have entered to raise money for their home villages that were invaded and impoverished by Shadaloo; Guile and Chun-Li have entered because of their personal vendettas against M. Bison for murdering their respective loved ones, as well as both officers vowing to bring Shadaloo to justice. There is no official champion due to Akuma murdering the host of the tournament.[2]

Media[]

Animation[]

In Street Fighter: The Animated Series, the episode " The Medium is the Message" is loosely based on the tournament plot. The ones who competed in the "International Street Fighters Tournament" were Ryu, Ken, Guile, Chun-Li, Blanka, Cammy, Birdie, Sodom, Adon, Rose, and Guy.

The OVA Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation also had a "Second Street Fighter Tournament" plot which was sponsored by an original antagonist of Shadaloo, the challengers who entered the tournament were Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, Birdie, Adon, Guy, Sodom, Rolento, and Dan. Vega and Zangief were unofficial challengers who worked for Shadaloo and were only matching up against the street fighters just to audition them.

Live-action[]

Street Fighter: World Warrior by Machinima was a planned upcoming live-action TV series based on Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. It was the second season of the Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist series. Production of this new series is currently postponed.

Parodies[]

Street Fighter: The Later Years was created and released by CollegeHumor in 2006, The Later Years simultaneously acts as a "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue for the 12 original World Warriors from II and reuniting them to form another tournament. The story starts when Zangief, now reduced to cleaning up arcades, enters a cab with Dhalsim as its driver. From there, it shows that most of the fighters are past their prime, living washed-up lives and taking on horrible and/or overly-demanding day jobs. All except Ryu (who is a successful fighter hocking his style on TV) and to an extent Blanka.

The Second World Fighting Tournament was parodied on The Pete Holmes Show during the "Street Fighter Red Tape" skits, where Holmes plays an office accountant named Dale who has to regulate the budget and rules of the Street Fighter II' Turbo tournament. One by one, he calls the combatants into his office to discuss their particular problems and even pokes fun at them. There are 12 street fighters competing in the tournament, only eight of them were interviewed except Zangief, E. Honda, Barlog and Sagat.

Trivia[]

  • According to the profile of Cammy White in Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, she is 19-years-old, it also states she is born on January 6, 1974, making the events of the Second World Fighting Tournament take place in the present year of 1993.
