Street Fighter Wiki

The Shun Goku Satsu, usually translated as the Raging Demon, is a popular attack in the Street Fighter series, known as Akuma's most powerful attack. Its popularity has caused it to find its way into the movesets of several other characters, as well as other forms of media.

Capcom Games

  • In Mega Man Zero 3, one of the final boss Omega Zero's attacks, "Ranbu", is visually and tactically similar to the Shun Goku Satsu: Omega glides over to Zero, hits him seven times with his O-Saber, and uppercuts him away with a sword swing.
  • In Capcom's action-adventure game Okami, the way that Mrs. Orange makes Cherry Cakes is a reference to the Shun Goku Satsu. But instead of the kanji "天" (ten, "heaven"), it appears the one used to write "mochi" (餅). This was referenced in one of Amaterasu's after-match win quotes after defeating Akuma in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
  • In Breath of Fire III there's a learnable Skill called Disembowel which mimics the same animation as the Shun Goku Satsu: once used the caster dashes toward the target and unleashes a flurry of attacks while hidden behind a white screen. To further the reference, the Skill is known as "Messatsu" in Japanese, one of Akuma's most famous phrases and one he speaks often as he begins the move.
    • The Disembowel Skill returns in Breath of Fire IV with an updated animations which now ends in a glowing background with a large Ten kanji displayed in its center, making the move resemble the Shun Goku Satsu even more.

Other Games

  • In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future (a Capcom developed licensed fighting game based on the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga/anime series), Iggy and Pet Shop have Shun Goku Satsu-styled moves. Iggy's Super Move Sand Storm begins with him approaching the opponent, then latching onto them while his Stand (his spiritual manifestation, akin to a ghost or poltergeist that he can control), The Fool grabs their ankles. The camera becomes static while hitsparks are displayed and the camera returns to the opponent on the ground. Pet Shop's Raging Birdie (or Shun Birdie Satsu) has more in common to Akuma's move by name than function: it is not a throw, can be blocked and the animation is completely visible. Both Sand Storm and Raging Birdie use the same button input as the Shun Goku Satsu. These supers can be viewed here; Iggy's super can be seen at 6:57 while Pet Shop's begins at 3:29. Noriaki Kakyoin also has a Shun Goku Satsu-styled move that instead causes his Stand, Hierophant Green to attack his enemy from within. It does not cause the screen to blackout, but it is unblockable, requires throw range and causes multiple hits.
  • Koga Shuko from Double Dragon (Neo-Geo) also possesses the Shun Goku Satsu known as Kirin. As the move performed, he disappears while brutalizing his opponent in 10 hits as the last blow knocks the opponent with a powerful lightning blast.
  • In the indie fighting game Skullgirls, Squigly has a secret Blockbuster named 'Shin Goku Saltsu' (a direct reference to the Shun Goku Satsu combined with the term 'salt', a fighting game community slang word for annoyance) which features an animation very similar to the Shun Goku Satsu; when the move is inputted, Squigly hovers just off the ground with her arms outstretched and dashes towards the opponent for a grab, just as Akuma does.
  • In the original Bayonetta game, the secret boss, Father Rodin, has a move that directly resembles the Shun Goku Satsu. Instead of having his back to the screen, he simply lounges on the floor. This is one of the more powerful variations as it leaves the target with only single point of health left.
  • In Battle Arena Toshinden 3, Abel and Veil have a move called "Ultimate Phantom" which resembles a slow version of the Shun Goku Satsu. As the move is performed, Abel/Veil disappear as the screen darkens completely save for the opponent, and rush towards the opponent; should they connect a hit, the opponent is then brutalized for a total of 8 hits by the invisible Abel/Veil, and upon finishing, the final blow sees the opponent launched into the ceiling. The main difference is their moves which Abel uses this as his desperation move while Veil uses this as his secret move.
  • In Warriors Orochi 2/Musou Orochi: Maou Sairin, Orochi X AKA Shin Orochi (True Orochi) has a move similar to the Shun Goku Satsu as his R1 Type Action (he traps his opponent inside an unblockable red orb and performs rapid invisible high speed slashes at them). However, it is mostly non-fatal, save on Chaos difficulty, where it is an instant kill. In the Warriors Orochi 3/Musou Orochi 2 sequel however, it is instead replaced by a different Type Action.
  • In Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII-2, optional DLC boss Amodar uses an attack called the Iron Bear Claw as his Full ATB Skill, which resembles the Shun Goku Satsu. In addition, the player can also use this attack as a Feral Link technique, which requires the same command input as the Shun Goku Satsu.
Smash No Hado

Ryu's "Congratulations" screen in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U's All-Star Mode features a Yoshi in an homage to the Shun Goku Satsu.

  • In Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Meta Knight has a Final Smash similar to the Shun Goku Satsu called the Galaxia Darkness, which can hit all available targets when it connects on at least one if more playable characters are on the field. However, it delivers below average knockback for a Final Smash and normally doesn't K.O. until the opponent's damage meter is above 100%.
    • In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the Shun Goku Satsu is referenced directly in Ryu's All-Star Mode ending with a shot of a black Yoshi standing over a defeated Ryu with his back turned and the familiar hit-sparks going on the behind them.
  • In SNK's The King of Fighters 2001, Yuri Sakazaki has Desperation Move (DM) known as the Yuri Chou Enbu ("Yuri Super Swallow Dance") that acts as the Shun Goku Satsu, except that she runs to her opponent at the start and does the "peace" sign with both of her hands at the end, but only if the attack connects.
  • In Sony's PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Toro Inoue has a Level 3 Super Move called "Toro's dream comes true ^o^" that parodies the Shun Goku Satsu. Upon activation, Toro puts on his Oni costume and summons a club. Suddenly, Toro rushes towards the opponent(s) in the background while the screen goes black with slashes appearing on it. It then cuts to Toro standing victoriously with his back to the camera, a dark aura radiating from him, and a giant kanji of "person" ( jin?) appearing on the ground. The name of this Super Move and the kanji that appears both reference Toro's dream to become a human.
  • In Marvel Avengers Alliance, Squirrel Girl has an attack called "Wrath of the Raging Squirrel" which is an obvious parody of Akuma's "Wrath of the Raging Demon" in both name and looks with the screen going dark and the target getting hit with an unseen barrage of attacks.
  • In Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, there is a mode where the player controls the character Monomi. The mode consists of Monomi fighting various "Monobeasts". The Boss Monobeast that resembles an ape is capable of using the Shun Goku Satsu on the player. The animation flashes the kanji for "iron" (鉄 tetsu) at the end.
  • In both Sonic Wings Special and Limited, Kowful boasts and wishes to fight against another opponent somewhere in either another dimension or Mars from within two of his possible endings, which leads to Tenukie Chaudo to suddenly appear behind him in order to accept the challenge against Kowful and that Tenukie itself beats up Kowful by using a Shun Goku Satsu-esque similar attack right before it leaves after Kowful himself had lost the match (with Tenukie itself having a red kanji on its back and red hair similar to Akuma's own on its head from within Kowful's Mars ending).
  • In the IGS 2D beat'em up series, Knights of Valour/Sangoku Senki (based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms), the portrayal of the historical figure Liu Bei in the third game is able to perform a 10 hit reference move to the Shun Goku Satsu (but is much more brief and does not do too much damage). The technique is known as the Menghu Tiaojian/Mouko Choukan (猛虎跳澗, Fierce Tiger Leaping Valley Stream), named after a real-life Chinese martial arts technique like with many of Liu Bei's own special moves.
  • In the Pokémon spin-off title Pokémon Duel, the player has a choice to "name" what one of their rivals says, one of the choices being "Wrath of the Red-faced Demon," a parody of Akuma's "Wrath of the Raging Demon" from Street Fighter IV. The character, named Sharon, is a "tsundere", which is why she would be "red-faced": blushing.
  • In the Kickstarter-funded game River City Ransom: Underground, the character Glen, whom uses a style reminiscent of Ryu, Ken and Akuma's, has an ultimate special called the "Rocking Demon", a parody of the Shun Goku Satsu which works exactly in the same way.
  • Godbert Manderville, an NPC from the online game Final Fantasy XIV used this move to defeat a NPC named Akebono.[1] While using the same moves, Godbert doesn't show his "Kanji" after beating Akebono.
  • In the indie fighting game Them's Fightin' Herds, the character Pom's ultimate technique is a counter that if triggered, has her rush the opponent. If Pom connects, the screen blackens as she delivers a 61 hit barrage of attacks to her opponent. When the attack is finished, she has her back to the screen.
  • In the 2019 Roblox game, Rogue Lineage, there is an entire "class" based on Akuma's movesets and appearance, titled "Akuma", which can be upgraded into the class "Oni" which offers more moves to use. Oni's upgraded class offers a move extremely similar to Street Fighter's Raging Demon.

Anime and Manga

  • In episode 31 of the anime Heybot!, a dark version of the main character appears and uses the Shun Goku Satsu, a 螺 (from 螺子 neji, screw) appearing on his back after using the technique.

Television and Animations

Internet

  • The move appeared on the show, Death Battle where Akuma and Evil Ryu used it to defeat Mortal Kombat characters Shang Tsung and Scorpion respectively, the former Street Fighter character managed to do so while the latter failed. Dan also tried using the move to defeat Hercule, but he tripped and failed to pull it off.
    • In a later episode, Akuma used the Raging Demon on Mortal Kombat final boss Shao Kahn, only to be interrupted out of it due to the latter's own protection of his soul. Unlike the Shang Tsung episode, this version was stylized exactly like the Street Fighter V iteration.
  • The move appeared on the show, One Minute Melee where God Rugal tried to use the move to defeat Bison, but it was blocked by Seth's body.
  • Popular messaging app Discord has an Easter egg called "Raging Demon". On desktop, if a user opens the keyboard shortcut list with Ctrl/Cmd + /, the list will show a shortcut titled "Raging Demon", executed by pressing H twice, pressing the right arrow, and pressing N and then K. The shortcut list will disappear, a series of visual effects representing punches will display, and then the character kanji 天 appears on the screen.
