Akuma FTW

akumas height

It says in street fighter alpha 3 that akuma is 5'8 where does it say hes 5'10?

Akuma's DOB

It'll probably be posted on the official SSF4 website soon enough, but if anyone finds a CONFIRMED DOB for him before then, please just include your references so that it can be proven and no-one can then dispute it. If you don't know how to cite references, ask me on my talk page and I'll be glad to help.--Evilsbane 13:52, December 27, 2009 (UTC)
PS - That goes for any other characters where a particular stat is listed as "unknown".

The Kanji as written means Husband, One would assume they were going for the simplified version of the chinese kanji for "nothing" or "crooked heaven." The true ten symbol has the top line longer. One version of the game has this fix.

His second Ultra.

Doesn't its japanese name translate to Tensho Kaireki Jin? As in his Ultra combo from the ending of 3rd strike? --Black Judgment of GuyvirothFile:Shungokusatsuwmv.gif 20:05, May 15, 2010 (UTC)

Race

Is he black? 213.10.213.117 23:26, February 20, 2011 (UTC)

No, but his skin seems to get darker and his hair lighter the more evil he becomes, to the point where Oni's skin and hair are dark blue and bright white respectively.--Evilsbane 00:02, February 21, 2011 (UTC)

The title of this article

This is an english-language wiki, so we use the english-language name, Akuma. Otherwise we'd have to start renaming everything like Balrog would be Bison and Bison would be Vega and Vega would be Balrog and the Flash Kick would be the Somersault Kick and so on and so on.--Evilsbane 07:08, May 30, 2011 (UTC)

Prayer beads check his power?

I've done some searching, and I haven't seen anything that suggest that the prayer beads kept his power under control. Sources please? 144.96.14.178 20:15, July 9, 2011 (UTC)

MVC3: Fate of Two Worlds

In the game, there are 32 characters ready for play, and 6 characters that were unlockable on a "Progressive Game Clear" basis and 2 DLC Characters for a total of 40 Characters. Shouldn't those 6 characters (including Akuma) should be called "Supplemental Characters" instead? They aren't Secret, but more like "supplemental" that rewards those who play the game often with more depth. Just a suggestion. Dark Insanity 15:16, July 25, 2011 (UTC)

Character Design

I read somewhere Akuma's design was based off of a type of demon in Buddhism. Is this true? 207.216.212.126 14:42, August 31, 2011 (UTC)

Edits required

I would like to provide edits and updates to this wiki. Especially concerning a number of the western misconceptions of this character. First off, contrary to popular opinion, the real name of this character, Gouki, (Gou- strong or great) (Ki-spirit, soul, ghost, aura, or energy. Essentially having the same meaning as "Chi") Has nothing to do with any connotation of the demonic. His name would literally translate to "great energy" or "strong spirit".

Also, I would like to make a point of the misconception of Gouki as a villain or "evil" character. The name "Akuma" given to the character by Capcom USA is a misnomer, much like Dictator Vega being named "Mike Bison". The perception of Gouki by capcom USA, based upon his appearance and role of secret boss in SSF2T was that American audiances would automatically brand him as evil, villainous, or demonic. Therefore, he was given the name "Akuma" by Capcom USA, and a subsequent backstory about demonic posession being the source of this power was added.

In reality, Gouki is more of an "anti-hero" character, rather than a villain. His character has devoted himself entirely to the Satsui No Hado, the realization of it's absolute limit, and fullest potential. In deciding upon this path, he has rejected human emotions, personal ego, and human weaknesses. Through this path of Ansatsuken, he has transcended humanity. The kanji "Ten" that appears on his back meaning "sky" or "Heaven" (literally derived from a human figure with a line above it's head) in Gouki's case means "beyond human". Gouki has literally become the personification of "power made flesh", and would hold more in common with a sentient hurricane, earthquake, or volcano, than a human being. This "sentient disaster" metaphor can be witnessed through his training, in which he can unintentionally destroy life that happens to be in the way of his lethal force. Likewise, however, his immense distructive power can also be used to unintentionally benefit mankind, as can be seen in the non-canonical ending for his "Shin" form in Capcom Fighting Jam.

The most telling example of Gouki being mislabeled as a villain in the west is through his most notorious technique: Shun Goku Satsu. In this technique, the 16 hells of Buddhism are channelled through the one performing it. The performer must maintain a perfect Zen like state of emptyness and tranquility, lest they be consumed by the multiple hells they channelled as well. A being consumed by treacherous motivations (as Gouki is often labelled as) would destroy themself if they attempted the technique. This same emptyness is what Gouken and Gen used to survive this technique. It was also the very treacherous nature of Dictator Vega that caused him to be so soundly destroyed by this technique in SSF2T. It was also Dictator Vega's selfish lust for power that caused Gouki to target him for assasination, as Gouki himself detests such motives.

His only will is to push the limits of the path he has chosen, to face willing, worthy opponents in life and death struggle, and to kill, or be killed by them. This can be witnessed by his interactions with Ryu, whom he recognizes as having the same potential for the path of the satsui no hado. He seeks to draw this potential out of Ryu and have battle with a being on his own level to the death. Gouki is not concerned with egoistic victory or defeat, and would choose death without hesitation upon his defeat, as was the case with his one known defeat against Gouken.

Doubtless, the creation of Kuruoshiki Oni is a response to the westernized interpretation of Gouki as Akuma.

I would also like to add some information about his appearance. Namely the buddhist iconographic and sculptural origins of his appearance. One of the primary influences on his appearance is that of the Kongorikishi, or Nio guardian statues. These are a type of fierce warrior statue that usually guard the gate of many buddhist temples and shrines. In a number of different illustrations, Gouki can be seen standing in the same wrathful stance. Most noteably in his first full color illustration by Bengus/CRMK in SSF2T, and the illustration for his "Shin" variation in SVC Chaos. Also, a number of his taunts in SFIV series mimic this same pose. Another buddhist Influence on Gouki's appearance is that of the "Twelve heavenly Generals", who also share the same wrathful appearance as Kongorikishi, with many also wearing the same unkempt Top-knot hair style as Gouki.

Needless to say, much of this information would have to be condensed and edited before being added. I would also have to search for sources and citations that could prove many of my claims about the truth of this character. If I could be permitted to make edits to this page, I believe It could greatly benefit it's overall content. Either that, or I could work on a seperate "Gouki" character wiki exploring these differences in cultural interpretation.

Height
