Proper spelling of the ship's name[]
Since this seems to be a bit of a debated topic, and to avoid this from turning into a further edit war, I just decided to make a topic about it and have others chime in on it.
Ruby Heart's ship has been referred to as both "Partenaire" and "Pare-Tonn're", with the latter being the most recently localized use. The former was used in the PS2 version, but my argument for the latter being that the PS2 translation also featured some other errors in her moveset names (I think the PS2 version used "Flan Mer" instead of "Flammeile" for her one of her Hypers? Something like that.)
Given that the proper spelling of a French word is incredibly difficult to translate correctly from Japanese, there really isn't a proper way of going about this, so I'd like to see what other people think on this. The SFV site lists the her ship's name as "ćć¼ććć¼", which is romanized as "Paatonaa", basically pronounced similar to the word "partner" in english as opposed to the other two. Until we get an official translation on the name of her ship, I'd propose using "Pare-Tonn're", as stated before, due it it being the more recent official romanization. - Partenaire is the correct name and has been since the start. In all Japanese sources, the name of the Hyper Combo is "ćć«ććć¼ć«", which has been a widely used way for Japanese people to render the French "Partenaire", as seen here, here and in the name of a CooRie single, just to show a few.
- The line in the SFV site can also be interpreted to say that the ship's name is "the French word for "Partner"", giving no indication of the French word itself. "ćć¼ććć¼" is widely used to write the English word "Partner", enough to have a wikipedia page. Even if you wanna ignore that, look hard enough and you can even find ćć¼ććć¼ used in Japanese sites in place of "partenaire".
- Even if one wants to disregard all this due to the difficulties of transcribing French words in kana, the fact those words are consistently used by Japanese sources to refer to "Partenaire" should be enough evidence to consider what were the JP devs thinking when they used it. I don't mind if the page uses Pare Tonn're because it may be (or will be, if the SFV translator so wishes) the "official" English name, but it's highy improbable it was the intended or correct translation of the Japanese original, and as such IMO it should be pointed out. - Fair point, I hadn't known about the usage of that spelling in Japanese. I usually tend to go with the most recent official english translation, which is why I argued in favor of "Pare-Tonn're", but you make a good point for it's intended use. My one hesitation is that Ruby Heart's moves have always been translated dubiously, with the most common translation of one of her attacks being "Schwarzaile", which isn't French, let alone an actual word (apparently it's supposed to be "Cheval Seller"). Despite this, it's been used very frequently, including in the 2009 release, so honestly I'm not sure at all whether to go off the intended move translation or the most recent official one. Either one could be fine in the article, or we could mention it being translated as both, I'm just trying to be as accurate as possible to Capcom's official localizations until we get a proper translation.
- Of course, it might not end up as either, as there have been some odd romanizations in the character encyclopedia translations ("Kyper" instead of "Khyber" comes to mind). There are solid points to be made for both, so I concede that either one would be acceptable for the time being until they get around to officially translating the rest of the pages.
