Description[]
Executed by performing a quarter-circle forward motion and pressing kick (or any attack button for Modern Control), JP summons a humanoid figure made of Psycho Power to attack his opponent. The version has the ghost do a mid-level clawing attack. The version does an overhead clawing attack. The version does a low attack. The Overdrive version does a double attack, knocking the opponent back.
By holding the kick button, the phantom disappears just in front of JP before it can strike the opponent.
Tactics[]
Rather than being orthodox projectiles, Torbalan seeks an opponent before striking. Each version has its unique function. The Light version travels fast to the opponent and knocks them down on hit. Medium Torbalan is an overhead, which can catch the opponent off-guard if they are crouching. Conversely, the Heavy version hits low, which can be used against an opponent attempting to shimmy or retreat. OD Torbalan strikes the opponent twice and allows JP to gain significant frame advantage.
Because JP specializes in keeping his opponent at a distance with a variety of projectiles and setups, utilizing Torbalan is crucial to JP's gameplan. While his other projectile is faster and can appear out of the ground to surprise the opponent, it can be blocked standing or crouching. Torbalan forces the opponent to guess to block high or low, which can be difficult if used up close. Additionally, JP can throw a feint phantom to get his opponent to react or spend Drive Meter to parry, especially if they are close to Burnout. If a characters dash or other forward advancing moves are fast enough, they can avoid the strike entirely, leaving JP open.
Trivia[]
The Torbalan (Торбалан) is a figure from Slavic Mythology, it is the Bulgarian variant of The Sack Man, a figure similar to the bogeyman, portrayed as a man with a sack on his back who carries naughty children away. Variants of this figure appear all over the world. Several countries contrast their version of the Sack Man with the benign sack carrier Father Christmas.
